David Macaulay
David Macaulay is a picture book author and illustrator. He was born December 2, 1946, in Burton-on –Trent, England. When he was eleven years old, he moved to Bloomfield, New Jersey. This was the first time in his life that he had worn long pants. He went to college at The Rhode Island School of Design and spent five years in their Rome and European Program.
David and his family now live in Vermont. One of his favorite things is drawing. He says, “The better I draw buildings, the worse I draw people.”
An interesting thing about David is that he used a Woolly Mammoth to walk you through The New Way Things Work. One time he climbed to the top of the Great Pyramid and though it is illegal he persuaded the authorities to make an exception. Black And White, one of his books, earned the Caldecott Medal. Castle and Cathedral received the Caldecott Honors.
David likes to draw with pen and ink. He uses lots of cross hatching in his pictures and never puts backgrounds on his drawings.
The first book he published was Cathedral. Some of his other books are Black and White, Castle, and Why The Chicken Crossed The Road.
